Role-Play: Communicating Your Distress the Right and Wrong Ways
You are the client paying for the service, so your feelings about the color and cut are more important than ours. But remember that every artist has a fragile ego and your complaints have a better chance of being heard if they are conveyed diplomatically. It is all in the delivery. The following two role-playing examples might help if you find yourself in a sticky salon situation. You have learned many cutting and coloring terms in this book, and now you can use that professional language to communicate more effectively with your stylist. My best advice: remain calm and always start any complaint with a compliment.
DON’T DO THIS:
Client: “My hair looks like I cut it myself with a pair of kitchen scissors!”
INSTEAD, DO THIS:
Client: “I like the cut, but it feels too choppy. I’m not sure it fits my personality. I’d like something a little bit cleaner and more classic.”
DON’T DO THIS:
Client: “I hate this color. This blond is so fake, I look like a stripper!”
INSTEAD, DO THIS:
Show the colorist a photo of the color you wanted and then say: Client: “This is the blond that I was going for, something buttery and warmer. This is pretty, but I feel that it’s too light for me. I want a more sophisticated color. I wonder if this could be taken down a notch with some lowlights or a glaze?”
